On August 8, 2005, PBM Nutritionals, LLC, received the Five Star Recognition award from the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). The award was presented to our infant formula–manufacturing affiliate company for its outstanding leadership and personnel policies that support employee participation in the National Guard and Armed Forces Reserve.
“PBM Nutritionals is deeply committed to supporting our men and women who participate in the National Guard and Reserve,” said PBM president and CEO, Paul B. Manning. “The least we can do as a company is to maintain human resource policies that accommodate employees who serve our country.”
The Five Star Recognition is earned by employers who go “above and beyond the call of duty” in accommodating employees’ military service and is an affirmation of the following actions:
- Support of Guard and Reserve member employees in peace, in crisis, and in war
- Compliance with the Uniformed Services Employment Rights and Reemployment Act
- Effective management of Guard and Reserve member employees
- Implementation of ‘Over and Above’ policies that provide more support than required by law
- Support of the ESGR
Vermont officials who attended the award ceremony included Governor James Douglas, Representative Bernie Sanders, Senator Patrick Leahy, Senator James Jeffords, and Adjutant General Martha Rainville. PBM was one of the few small private businesses recognized at the event. Stephen Smith, associate director of human resources, accepted the award on behalf of PBM Nutritionals.
“It is a privilege to accept this award for our company and two of our employees who were called to active service in support of the war,” said Smith. “Chris Moss is currently serving in Iraq, and Colin Ramsey is serving stateside.”
ESGR is an agency within the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. The Five Star Recognition is the highest-level recognition presented to employers for providing Guard and Reserve member employees with more support than what is required by law.
